Read your post about getting back to Grandma and Mom's cooking. I have tried to raise my kids and cook without a lot of processed foods. I do believe in convenience foods (box mac and cheese). I hope you will check out my blog. It has a lot of recipes that are easy to prepare, economical and many that you can prepare ahead or in a crockpot. Your credentials are amazing. I hope to surf your blog more when I have more time.

Man, you're fast. It's been so long since I've posted I didn't think anyone would still have me on their feed list.

I hear ya about the organization, I did the folders things from the beginning. I couldn't imagine not having them in folders.

Pruning the other day did feel good but yeah, I also felt the "what if I miss something important" twinge.

I think the really important piece to it all is identifying those feeds you can't possibly live without and focus on them. No one in their right mind is going to be able to read it all, all the time. I think for me now, it's a matter of taking the time :)

Yay! Glad to see you posting again.

Info overload is HARD. You have to be ruthless in what feeds/other things you read.

I've always subscribed to a large number of RSS feeds - 1500 was my max, and I'm at about 500 right now. Here's how I tame them:

1. Organize them into folders/tags by topic. I also create a "Short List" of feeds that I know I will always want to read, no matter what. Why do this? It lets you "mark all as read" folder by folder when you get behind, without the fear of missing out on something you REALLY want to read (because that one's in your Short List).

2. Every once in a while, go through your feed list, and dump stuff. I call this pruning, and it can be hard if, like me, you have "fear of missing something". :-) I regularly dump stuff that's not a full text feed, posts to often, never posts anything interesting, or I'm just plain bored with. Make a backup of your reading list (export to OPML) first, and then start chopping!

Interesting thoughts about wiki's. I set up a wiki at my last job mostly for common support questions, then I expanded it with a section for my assistants and later my replacement to have information about the network and what each server does. It provided an easy and easily accessible way to disseminate information for the group. It ended up merging with a wiki that was started by others there so that there could be a single location for information of the computer network as well as information about people and projects (it was at an university aerospace lab, with some of the students starting their own wiki about the research they were working on).

It is great when a company can provide a challenging and enjoyable technical environment. The fact that you mention working at BCD Travel raises a question for me that I would appreciate if you can answer. I am about to receive an offer to work for them, and I was searching the web for stories of employees to gage what it is like to work there. I switched from a job I very much enjoy (at the University) for a job that paid more, but one that I have in just a few months, come to hate. The job is not challenging and the work environment is dysfunctional with group battling against each other trying to make only themselves to look good. Any insight you can provide into BCD Travel would be appreciate. Of course if you could respond by email that would be a better forum for this discussion. Thanks,
